Pothole Dome

If you want to climb Pothole Dome, the parking area is at the extreme western end of Tuolume Meadows, just where the highway enters the meadows or, perhaps, leaves the meadow, depending upon your direction of travel.

The climb to the top of Pothole Dome is fairly easy. From the top of Pothole Dome, you get a little different perspective on Tuolumne Meadows.

There are many places to stop along the highway in Tuolumne Meadows. However, to minimize damage to the meadow from foot traffic, the Park Service has closed access to much of the meadow. Therefore, if you want to walk out onto the meadow, or to the Tuolumne River, be sure to find a place that permits access.

Tioga Pass

A Middle to Late Triassic volcanic vent structure, named the Tioga Pass caldera by Schweikert and Lahren (1999), is exposed near the eastern boundary of Yosemite National Park. Rocks they associate with the Tioga Pass caldera are will exposed along the Yosemite Park boundary in the flanks of Gaylor Peak and Mount Dana, northwest and southeast, respectively, of the Tioga Pass entrance station to Yosemite National Park.

Nunatak Nature Trail

A nunatak is an isolated knob or peak of bedrock that projects prominently above the surface of a glacier and is surrounded by glacier ice. The word is derived from the Eskimo for "lonely peak."

I stopped here to see what this trail was all about. However, it was raining pretty hard with no signs of letting up, so I went on down the canyon.

Mono Mills

Mono Mills
To meet the ever increasing demand for lumber and cord wood the Bodie Railway and Lumber Company was formed in February 1881. Timber was harvested from various tracts to the south. It was milled at this site and then shipped to Bodie on the railroad via Warm Springs and Lime Kiln. The sawmill was a two story structure capable of producing 80,000 board feet in a 10 hour shift (when the crew was sober) and was powered by a 16 inch steam engine. With the development of electricity at Green Creek and reduced gold production in Bodie, Aurora, and Masonic, the demand for lumber and fuel wood diminished and Mono Mills was abandoned in 1917.
