Front Yard

One month, some growth 1-2 inches.

This is how the garden looked November 4th, 2001. The moss is growing in the bog, and most of the plants have put on 1 to 2 inches of growth.

Gneiss with many lichens.

I was able to count six obviously different lichens on this rock. The stick is ruled in 10 cm increments.

Penstemon heterophyllus Lindley var. purdyi (Keck) McMinn

We bought this Penstemon at Yerba Buena Nursery. The variety is pretty widespread on northern California, but most collections are from Lake and Mendocino counties. The oldest known collection was made on Snow Mountain in 1891 by an unknown person.
