As with all plant collection data there are widely varying differences in the quality of the data.

Positional accuracy varies substantially from collection to collection. Some collections give the location as widely as "near Mono Lake." At best these collections can be mapped at a location on the shore of the lake.

Other collections give a location such as "3 miles north of Lee Vining on US Hwy 395." It is most desireable when the named location is accepted by the Board of Geographic Names (BN), with coordinates published in the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). Sometimes the named locations no longer exist, as in the case with the "Mono Lake Post Office" or "Hammonds." It turns out that both of these locations are at the present day site of the Tioga Lodge on US Highway 395, north of Lee Vining, but some sleuthing is often required to find historic locations. When a collection location and direction are known, geographic coordinates are estimated using maps or GoogleEarth.

Many collections use PLSS locations. These also have widely varying positional accuracy. I find that the Township or Range number are often off by one number, often resulting in an error of six miles. Also programs that calculate geographic coordinates from PLSS locations often neglect fractional sections, resulting in a placement error of a half to two-third of a mile. I treat PLSS locations with some well-deserved skepticism, and try to validate then using the collector's location description.

Hand-held GPS receivers have improved positional accuracy, but it would be helpful if collectors would record datum, and positional accuracy in their data.
