When I first read the field notes of Annie Alexander and Louise Kellogg, I was fascinated by the descriptions they wrote about the places they went and the plants and animals they found there. By publishing my field notes on the Internet I hope to follow a little bit in their tradition.

Along the central California coast, the Pacific plate drags the Sierra de Salinas, shown here composed of Jurassic-age Franciscan trench deposits, to its future watery grave in another trench near the Aleutian Islands. While we wait for the inevitable, mankind has built a jewel of a road in California Highway 1, the Cabrillo Highway, across the battleground of the landslides above and the restless sea below. Clyde Golden, 21 May 2012, characters observed: Annual, tap-rooted, erect, 10 cm., finely hairy glandular; Cotyledons persistent; Leaves cauline, opposite, petiole 3 mm., elliptic, 15-19 mm. x 3-4 mm. wide, base tapered, not palmate lobed, margin serrate; Inflorescence single flowers in axils, alternate; Pedicels 1 mm (in flower) to 7 mm (in fruit); Bracts 8 mm., lanceolate, prominently veined (i.e., significantly different from leaves); Style 1.2 mm.; Fruit lobed spreading, notched > ½, each lobe 5 mm. x 2.5 mm. wide; Seeds (7 found with capsules open), 1.5 mm., pale yellow brown, surface rugose, not ridged.

Ran this collection though the Jepson 2nd edition, and Welch's Utah Flora (since it has V. biloba). A couple of problems I see; first the pedicels are too short for either V. persica or V. biloba. Four other things would push me away from V. persica: it's erect, it's petiolate, leaf blade too narrow, and style too short. For V. biloba, the seeds should be transversely ridged, but they are rugose instead.

Coll. No. 925, 25 May 2013, characters observed: Woody shrub, 1-2 m.; Stem, glabrous, thorns 0; Leaves, ±evenly distributed on branches, simple, petiole 4 mm. + blade 18 mm. × 10-12 mm. wide, not leathery, margin entire to distally toothed, abaxially glabrous in flower, few hairs on petioles, adaxial leaf surface, and proximal margins, deciduous unknown; Petals, #5, obovate, 10 mm × 5 mm. wide; Ovary inferior, top glabrous; Styles 3; Fruit, unknown (plant in flower).

Although thought to be different when collected, this is the same taxon as Coll. No. 926, including the somewhat unusual combination of characters typical of A. utahensis, i.e., number of styles and narrow shape of leaf, with absence of hairs on ovary and abaxial leaf suggesting A. alnifolia var. pumila.

Coll. No. 927, 20 May 2013, characters observed: Annual, spreading, to 2.5 cm.; Leaves, cauline, alternate; Inflorescence, not 1-sided; Pedicel, ≤ 1 mm., slender? or stout? (wider than thread-like); Sepals, 2.5 mm. × 1.5-3.0 mm. wide Petals, #2, 1.5 mm., found at top of ovary when plant in fruit; Stamens, #1, yellow; Stigma, sessile; Fruit, 2-valved, dehiscing from top; Seed, #many (>10), 0.4 mm., margin papillate.

At a superficial level, this specimen looks a lot like C. parryi, which in Mono County would be var. nevadense. However, at the character level, such as the length of the pedicel, the number of petals, the number of stamens, and the size of the seed, it keys better into C. roseum than into C. parryi.

Between A. bisceptrum and A. campanulatum, I went with the latter on the strength of leaves withered in flower, perianth keeled and tip margins in-rolled, and ignored perianth papery in fruit, and absence of a basal adaxial purple crescent.

On the 1st of October, 2013, the Mono Lake water level was 6380.6 feet, about 11½ feet below the level mandated in 1994. The sign reads:

Mandated Mono Lake Level

On September 28, 1994, the California State Water Resources Control Board set a target lake level of 6,392 feet, 25 feet below its 1941 level. The decision decreased water diversions by Los Angeles's Department of Water and Power (DWP) from four Mono Lake tributaries. This decision was made “in accord with the Court's mandate to protect public trust resouces where feasible and the mandate of the California Constitution to maximize the reasonable and bebeficial use of California's limited water resources.” The Board also ordered DWP to prepare and implement plans to restore damaged streams and waterfowl habitat.

When the Lake reaches its mandated level of 6,392 feet, this panel will be at water's edge.

The Plant List, which takes its names for Lupinus from ILDIS (International Legume Database & Information Service), elevates L. lepidus var. confertus to species rank as L. confertus Kellogg. The Plant List also submerges all of L. pratensis A. A. Heller, including var. eriostachyus C. P. Small, in synonomy with L. confertus Kellogg. The family Fabaceae is not published in FNANM (as of 4/27/2015).

Weitemier (2010) concludes that varieties of L. lepidus are ecotypes, recommends that they continue to be recognized at the varietal rank per Clausen, et al. (1939).

Ulistac Natural Area
California's Landscape in 41 Acres

The Ulistac Natural Area is representative of California's valley landscape west of the Coastal Range, much as it appeared before the footfall of European settlers.

The park encompasses seven diverse biotic communities -- grassland, coastal scrub, oak savannah, riparian woodland, sycamore woodland, oak woodland, and wetlands. Each is gradually strengthening its natural, distinctive identities and supporting an array of wildlife often specific to one commuity but sometimes common to many.

Ulistac -- What's in a Name?

“Ulis” was an Ohlone chief, and his village, in this general location, where seasonal campsites once existed, was called “Ulistac.” The name “Rancho Ulistac” was adapted in 1845 to describe the Mexican land grant for this same area.

This area along the Guadalupe River has undergone many changes through time.
  • Before 1776: A rich lowland valley where the Ohlone lived.
  • 1776 through the 1800s: Ranchland for grazing cattle and sheep.
  • Late 1800s through 1950s: Cultivated fields and orchards. (Photo: Courtesy of the California History Center Foundation, De Anza College, Cupertino, CA)

Rancho Ulistac
Changing Lands, Changing Hands

The Spanish established nearby Mission Santa Clara in 1777. They used the surrounding land as pastures for cattle and sheep, a move that had profound ecological effects. Native grasslands were soon overgrazed, so ranchers seeded the pastures with fast-growing exotic (non-native) grasses. Native grasses soon disappeared from the landscape.

With their lands and lifestyles disrupted by the mission, many native people left the area. Others who remained were lured into the mission system and were forced into hard labor and a complete cultural change. Disease, unknown to the Indians before European arrival, ravaged the dwindling local population.

California passed from Spanish to Mexican to American rule between 1822 and 1846. Likewise, ownership of Rancho Ulistac passed from the church to Native American and then to European American hands. Farming and grazing continued here during that time.
The Guadalupe River was used to transport goods to market until the mid-1800s, when Alviso, at the mouth of the river, was made into a seaport. Native people were believed to have been involved in this commerce both during and after the mission period.
This 1845 map of Rancho Ulistac identifies several Indian dwellings and a garden along the Guadalupe. The Native American owners, Marcello, Pio, and Cristobal, stayed in the area after the mission system was abolished and built three houses and a sweat lodge. Their garden produced corn, beans, and wheat.
